This series deserves as many stars as I can give!
Helena Hunting is a goddamn genius. Everything about this series from the one liners and witty banter to the hot as hell sex is GOLD. I binge read these books and I’m currently reading Forever Pucked, let me tell you, it’s just as good as the rest.
The writing is on point. Hunting has a way of sucking you into the pages and not letting go until it’s 3AM and you realize you have to get up for work in a few hours. There’s something to be said about an author that can captivate you for an entire series like that. I waited all of three minutes before one-clicking the next book in the series. I will most definitely be going back to re-read these books for many years to come, they’re THAT good.
Pucked by Helena Hunting
Alex Waters is the perfect book boyfriend, he’s sweet, thoughtful, and sexy as sin. Being a pro hockey player doesn’t hurt either. Violet Hall is everything I’ve ever wanted in a heroine, she’s awkward, loveable, and foul-mouthed to boot. These characters, while sometimes OTT, seem real. They make mistakes and put their foot in their mouth like anyone else.
The surprising breakout star of this book, for me, was actually Violet’s stepbrother Buck who’s also on the same team as Alex and one of the reasons Violet has sworn off any future hockey boy hanky panky. The relationship between Violet and her big lug of a stepbrother is hilarious. You can tell that they love and care about each other by the way they’re constantly bickering. It’s like any real sibling relationship, you crap all over each other (in a mostly joking way), but heaven forbid someone else hurts them in any way.
I loved how the relationship between Alex and Violet developed. Alex’s actions sometimes made me want to throw my kindle at the wall in frustration, but that also lent to the real-ness of the book, people do stupid shit in relationships. Violet was no angel herself, she was stubborn at times, which was also frustrating, but Hunting did it in a way that made me understand her.
All in all, this book was incredible. It’s piss-your-pants funny while being heartfelt.
Pucked Up by Helena Hunting
I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I was to find that Miller ‘Buck’ Butterson was the hero for the next installment of this series. I was crushing on this playboy HARD while reading Pucked and fell in love with him in Pucked Up.
Sunshine ‘Sunny’ Waters is Alex’s sister, so there’s a whole lot of mixed feelings there when she starts to date Violet’s stepbrother Buck. While the double standard Alex held for their relationship in this book pissed me off, I understood it. Buck has been known to run through women like it’s his job and Alex just wants to protect his sister.
The only thing I didn’t really care for in this book was Sunny’s seeming inability to stand up for herself and what she wanted. This issue was resolved towards the end of the book, but I couldn’t help but roll my eyes a few times at her immaturity. She was flinging a lot of stuff in Buck’s face that he couldn’t control, when in reality he’d done nothing wrong. Buck took it and forgave her immediately for the stunts she pulled purposefully to make him jealous, which totally pissed me off. I will concede however, that she is just 20 years-old and has only ever had one high school boyfriend so there is a learning curve there when it comes to adult relationships.
In the end, I felt like Sunny matured and grew a much-needed backbone. I was happy with her character development and it definitely left me satisfied that my boy was in good hands.
Buck has a heart of gold and I loved everything about his character. Hunting showed us his vulnerability with his dyslexia and the memory of his mother. I cried reading this book, I felt how much he wanted to give back and was floored by how humble he was. Buck’s compassion was what made me fall in love with him.
This was a fantastic follow-up to Pucked, definitely a couldn’t put it down read.
Pucked Over by Helena Hunting
Oh my Jesus. Just when I thought no one could top my love for Buck, Randy ‘Balls’ Ballistic swept in with his beard and man bun and stole my heart, and other parts. Holy Christ on a cracker that man is what wet dreams are made of.
Hunting did it again, she made me laugh and cry and fall in love.
I’ll be honest, when I read Pucked Up I hated Lily’s character, but just a few chapters into Pucked Over and all that fell away. I connected with Lily LeBlanc almost immediately, she was so real. Her love for the people around her and work ethic really won me over. She was and is the perfect match for Randy.
I’m a sucker for the fuck buddies turned soul mates trope and this book didn’t disappoint. Their relationship was developed at a steady pace, it wasn’t insta-love, but it sure as hell was insta-chemistry. OMG, people. You want a melt your panties off read? Look no further. Sex scenes in books can be done either really well, or really bad. In Pucked Over Hunting took it to over the top amazeballs. Randy was already a sexy son of a bitch but his bedroom skills, wow. Just wow.
The heat factor aside, this book hits on all the feels. Pucked Over was not only my favorite book of the series, but it’s made its way into my top ten favorite books EVER! And I read a lot so that’s saying something.
So to wrap up, Pucked was amazing, Pucked up was a fantastic follow-up, and Pucked Over was one of the best books I’ve ever read. If you haven’t read this series, what the fuck are you waiting for? Get them NOW! You won’t be disappointed.
